          The Decorated Book:
          December 2, 2011 - March 9, 2012
          The Athenaeum of Philadelphia

          Picture
My new book, Summer Travels, was juried into this intriguing show of handmade books inspired by historical bindings in the Atheneaum collection. I styled my cover after a patterned Victorian binding by Alice Morse, and created the content with digital prints from my many years of travel sketchbooks. The making of it was an exercise in both craft and wonderful memories. The opening reception is December 2, 5-7 pm, and a related symposium with experts and scholars will take place that same day. Details and registration for the symposium at http://www.philaathenaeum.org/symposium.html

I'll put up a link when it's available. This drawing is by William Anastasi, an American artist who I mention in the essay. INDA 6 publication available now through the Manifest link above.

          The Wonder of Winterthur

          Picture
It was such a pleasure to write this feature article on the incredible House Museum and Garden just outside Philadelphia. The history is so rich and the place is so beautiful. The pictures with the article relate to the du Ponts, who created this masterpiece - see more of the 'wonders' on the Winterthur website http://www.winterthur.org/

Twombly's Fifty Days at Iliany is a mighty work. We mourn his passing but this 10 painting series in which he explored Classic themes of humanity and fresh ways of picturing them keeps him very much alive in Philadelphia.
